Way way back many ……….years ago !!!!! Yes that's right, would you believe it I started seeing ‘Joseph’ back in 1986 and the first person I saw was Mike Holoway doing the part on a Friday night here in Portsmouth with my parents. I loved it so much I went the next day and my parents laughed…………………….the rest is history as they say.
Over the years I saw the show many times in venues all over the uk – can’t remember the furthest venue I have been to but 1989 was the main start of going to see the show. I was invited with a friend to see it in………..Plymouth on Good Friday and I loved the show so much that un unaware to me my friend had booked us to see both the matinee & the evening show on the Saturday – wow what a weekend that was.
During 1989 I visited about 20 venues if not more and most were on a Friday and a Saturday, staying over in B&B’s, using public transport (hadn’t even started learning to drive then) and over the coming months I met the cast and they became friends.
This went on for about 3 years but then the cast slowly moved on and eventually the show closed However the 1989/1990 cast did do a show called ‘Robin – Prince of Sherwood’ and that was a fab show, shame it isn’t on tour anymore.
When the show closed (around 1991 approx) it went into London for a few years & I did go & see it in London with Philip Schofield in but I didn’t like it, it was too jazzed up & it put me off in going.
However the tour started up again in 1997 and hearing some of the ‘old cast’ were back – including Richard Swerrun, I decided to give it another go. One of the venues I went to was at Chichester where again I had a fab time –was playing the part & that’s when we are 99% certain Tan & I met. Chichester is like Sheffield and Reading it is done in the round and it was strange seeing the cast come onto the stage from underneath and if you were sitting in the stalls by the stairways you would hear them come up by the side of you!!!
However I did see the show in Woking once about 4 or 5 years ago now even though I had been put off by the London show, but it had changed and I didn’t like it. Also when I went to stage door to get my program signed – like the old days – but when I got there apart from screaming teenagers desperate to see their idol (I think it was Graham Tudor in the role but don’t quote me on that) and you could see that the cast wasn’t interested & rushed off. That put me off and stopped going again.
When the TV prog ‘Any Dream Will Do’ was on I watched it & really enjoyed it and thought I will go and see the guys on tour and in London & I did. My friend from work suggested to go & see the show & we did, we went to Bromley and saw Craig, Chris, Chris & Anthony on their first Sat of the tour………..I was hooked again loved it so much but the venues I just couldn’t get to so it was a long while before I saw it again.
In fact I can’t rem how long it was a good 6 months and then I saw it on & off during 2008. however since then I have seen it a lot and got many trips planned over the coming months.
Most recently I went to Southampton but only saw it twice for a couple of reasons – 1 it was almost sold out (unless you wanted the balcony) and 2 I wasn’t free on some of the days where there were seats.
However on both occasions I loved the show, there is something about the overture that gets you going and as for the mega mix……………I am more worn out clapping and watching the cast do the show!!!
Going to stage door on the Saturday with Tan was the best time ever and certainly bought back memories, the cast were fantastic, they had just done 3 shows back to back (20 years ago only did 2 shows on a Sat and that was a 2.30pm & a 7.30pm and they had time in-between the shows to relax with us!!)
However as much as they were tired they came out, chatted to us, had photographs taken without them saying ‘sorry got to zoom off’ and that is what makes the friendship between the cast & ……..no I am not a fan but you know what I mean.
Just last weekend I went to Eastbourne, saw 2 shows out of the 3 but was so tempted to see the 3rd one but thought no better no.
All the shows I have seen have been fab, it’s been great to see not only Craig, but also Anthony (that was in Brighton) and now Sam along with Tara, her understudy (sorry can’t rem her name) and now Rachel and Maria. They all have fab voices and I am sure that they will go a long way.
I dread to think how many times I have seen the show, many years ago I did make a note of everyone & I clocked up to about 350 shows so by now is at least another 50 so approx 400 shows of ‘Joseph’ in just 22 years and I have more lined up over the coming months, in fact thinking about it I have about 5 venues lined up already.
So thank you to Mike for being there on that first night because although the show has changed just slightly & of course updated with the set & the costumes (my I did like those dungarees) the show is exactly the same. Also through Joseph I have met loads of lovely people on and off during the tour & even now I meet up with some of them in other shows which they appreciate as well.
My next venues I am going to are Reading, Windsor, Northampton, Bromley, and Richmond. And perhaps Truro, Tunbridge Wells & Cheltenham and then we have the Autumn and Winter venues…………I think I will be clocking up the 500 mark at this rate!!!
Hope you have enjoyed my story I have tried to keep it brief although 23 years isn’t easy!!! Mind you I have seen a few ‘Joseph’s play over the years – Mike Holoway (he is now staring in Stardust which is touring around the UK), David Ian (well known theatrical producer), David Anthony (he has starred in Doctor Dolittle over the years), Richard Swerrun, Graham Tudor and of course more recently Craig, Anthony etc……..
Hope you enjoyed my story
