Lee Mead will be joining the cast of Wicker on 10th May, playing the part of Fiyero. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lee Mead lands role in Wicked (UKPA) – 5 hours ago
Lee Mead is to return to the West End stage after landing a role in hit show Wicked.
The star - who headed the cast in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - will join the cast in May, the month his wife Denise Van Outen is due to give birth to their first child.
Lee has been touring the UK in Oscar Wilde's Lord Arthur Saville's Crime but will return to the London stage to play Fiyero, which he said was "a fantastic part".
The star - who will join the cast on May 10 - added: "I'm really excited to be returning to the West End in this incredible show."
Wicked's executive producer said: "With a wealth of musical theatre experience already under his belt, Lee was, from the outset, the one to watch in the BBC's Any Dream Will Do. His much deserved win and subsequent performance in Joseph proved that he was an outstandingly talented leading man.
"I am really delighted that he has now chosen to make his return to the West End as Fiyero in Wicked alongside a fantastic new cast that will take us into our fifth year."
Wicked, now in its fourth year at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre, gives the "untold story" of the Witches of Oz.
Lee met his wife in the BBC One series Any Dream Will Do to find a new star for Joseph. Earlier this week they revealed they were expecting a girl, whom they have nicknamed "Teapot".

Wicked executive producer Michael McCabe said today: “With a wealth of musical theatre experience already under his belt, Lee was, from the outset, the one to watch in the BBC's Any Dream Will Do. His much deserved win and subsequent performance in Joseph proved that he was an outstandingly talented leading man. I am really delighted that he has now chosen to make his return to the West End as Fiyero in Wicked alongside a fantastic new cast that will take us into our fifth year." Hello! I saw Wicked on Friday night for the 3rd time, but the first time with the 2010/11 cast. I know there are a fair few ex Jo cast members in the tour but the ones I'm aware of are Lee Mead (obviously ) Louise Dearman and Lucy Newton. Lewis Bradley was on holiday...... Louise was a fantastic Glinda her vocal range is simply amazing and her comic timing impeccable. She plays the 'good' witch- a very shallow, self-absorbed person whose main concern is herself!! She falls for Fiyero (who is played by Lee) but finds herself in a love triangle. I found myself either laughing at her lines or in complete awe of her voice. Lee was a superb, charming Fiyero. It's a much smaller part compared to Joseph and Lord Arthur but he really brings something to the role. He's spot on vocally and his dancing is incredibly light but still masculine. The duet with Elphaba (the green witch played by Rachel Tucker from I'd Do Anything!) is stunning, very tender but still powerful. It's clear when you watch them that they're very comfortable with one another (having toured together in Tommy). Actually, the chemistry between Louise and Lee and Rachel and Lee is fab! Lucy Newton was on covering a track of another cast member. She is a swing and understudy for Glinda. She was so noticeable on stage, she has great presence on stage. I got to see Louise, Lee, Rachel and Lucy at the stage door as well as George Ure afterwards. They were all very sweet, some very chatty and some just charming!! I definitely recommend going to check out this cast. They're spot on.

I saw the show a couple of weeks ago two nights running (one of the perks of my job) and have to say I was actually disappointed in Lee's performance. He didn't have the spark about him he had playing Joseph and seemed tired of the role already despite only taking over 2 weeks before. I know he has a month old baby but that should not affect his performance onstage.
He did not sing the two big songs Fiyero has well, in fact they seemed to emphasise his speech impediment and his dancing was very lacklustre.
Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of his, but this is definitely not a good role for him.
I didn't see Louise because she was ill but Lewis was onstage but had no stage presence.
Rachel Tucker on the other hand is the best Elphie I have seen - she totally nailed Defying Gravity and No Good Deed.
I love Wicked and will go back to see Rachel again, but I think I might be timing my visits to coincide with Lee's holidays!
