Add a commentRecommend Lee MeadLEE MEAD is a quick talker. He crams as many words into a sentence as possible. He then crowbars as many of these into a paragraph as he can. He does this, it would seem, with not a minute to spare. This first impression is a mile from the nervous face singing Il Canto Degli Italiani in front of 83,000 rugby fans before England’s Six Nations match against Italy on Saturday. It would have been foolish to expect this. After all, Lee is a man who performs on stage for a living and that was by far the biggest crowd he had every played to. "I was a bit nervous," he says, understandably. "I suppose that once you’ve played an event like that, at that level, you get used to it but that was by a way the biggest crowd I have ever played to. I was, though, very proud to be able to sing the national anthem for England. It was a big day." It’s no shocker, but the 29-year-old, who visits Venue Cymru, Llandudno on February 27, adds the Twickenham crowd is a different beast to what he is used to. "It was just a sea of heads. Very strange. On stage it’s all black and it is only at the end of the show, when the house lights go up, that you see the crowd." Lee, who won TV’s Any Dream Will Do show in 2007, has just finished a 10-month run in the award-winning production of the musical Wicked in London’s West End, and is working on a follow-up to his successful album. Away from the technicolour dreamcoats and the theatres to which he has become associated, on his new tour he will be performing songs from all walks of life. The 29-year-old visits Venue Cymru, Llandudno on February 27. "The show is very mixed, I sing some songs with a five piece band and a brass section – it’s a good team. It’s not just the stuff from musicals, there are some covers. Songs that I’ve co-written from my albums and some pop songs. I also talk a bit about my life... A bit like an audience with. "I try and give the audience more. It’s more relaxing than acting. This gives me the chance to be myself which I don’t usually get to do." The son of a cab driver, who worked in part-time jobs while he put himself through drama college, he’s married to presenter and actress Denise Van Outen, who he met on the Any Dream show. "There has never really been a lifestyle change. There is obviously a day to day difference. I wasn’t doing interviews before. You get to go to special events, which is fun but as a person I am down to earth. I’m not going to be stepping out of limousines any time soon. I’m not tempted." To make his point, Lee, now dad to baby Betsy, continues: "I’m playing in Dublin soon. I’ve been there four or five times before and I’ve passed the theatre a few times. It’ll be the first time I’ve played with a full orchestra but afterwards all I’ll do is find a nice pub and relax. I’m that kind of guy." An Evening With Lee Mead, Venue Cymru, February 27. It has taken a few days to compose my thoughts on Lee's latest concert. It was at Kilworth House Theatre which is an open air theatre. It had most of the songs from Lee's previous concerts but we had some other additions including Why God from Miss Saigon, Bring Him Home from Les Miserables and GETHSEMANE from Jesus Christ Superstar. Lee was very excited/nervous about singing Gethsemane, he said he had waited seven years to sing it, but now he's 30 (2 days after the event) he thought he would give it a go. But back to the beginning... Lee started with Paint It Black and then Gonna Make You A Star. He commented that he could see everyone and it was making him very nervous as he can only usually see a spotlight and/or pitch black. Lee then sang Nothing Else Matters. The first musical theatre number was Close Every Door, from Joseph of course, he joked that he had his coat with him (he didn't). I love Lee's rendition of Close Every Door now probably more than I did during the show. It somehow feels different now and Lee gets very emotional singing it. It starts off acoustically which sounds wonderful. Lee's guest, Laura Wright then came on. She sang Fever and Scarborough Fair. Lee came back on stage and performed More Than Words with Laura. I love this as a duet- it's very sweet. (Lee has also performed this as a duet with Daniel Boys at Daniel's cabaret) Laura left the stage and Lee sang Collide, Kiss, Beyond The Sea and then started talking about the song he was going to finish with, the song he had wanted to sing for seven years... Gethsemane. I can't describe how good the performance was. You could've heard a pin drop, every person's eyes were focused on Lee as he portrayed every emotion needed in the song. He looked so intense, so angry but vulnerable and scared. His voice and his actions took the audience through every emotion tenderness, bitterness, despair, anger and resentment. It was so heartbreaking but brilliant at the same time. My heart was racing. After Gethsemane, Lee got a very spontaneous standing ovation. After the interval, which was much needed to reflect on Gethsemane, Lee performed Get Back and Dancing Through Life from Wicked. Why God followed and then The Best Is Yet To Come. Laura came back on for When The Stars Go Blue with Lee, she then stayed on and performed Send In The Clowns and The Last Rose Of Summer. Lee walked back on utterly in character, not looking at anyone and started to sing Bring Him Home- awarding him another standing ovation. Jesus Christ Superstar followed. I didn't expect to hear this one after already hearing one from JCS. He then performed When You Say Nothing At All dedicated to his wife and daughter. Of course, Any Dream Will Do was done, with an audience choir. Lee then performed Anthem from Chess which was stunning (and another standing ovation) which then led onto the final song Daydream Believer, which the audience stayed on their feet for and danced and sang along. It was a great evening and a phenomenal concert Sorry for rambling on a bit ;D
