Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat - Bournemouth Pavilion Monday 26th July 2010
CREATED by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1968, this ever-popular musical has been touring for more than 40 years, with a huge variety of performers. Produced and directed by Bill Kenwright, this 2010 version is brilliant.
Based on the Bible story, Joseph is his father Jacob’s favourite and a bit of a dreamer. His eleven brothers resent him, especially the fancy coat his Dad gives him, so they sell him off to merchants who take him to Egypt where he languishes in loin-cloth and chains. His recovery and return complete the parable.
Unlike previous productions using samey pre-recorded musical backing, this version features a superb live 7-piece band with a rich range and a powerful presence, led by musical director James McCullagh.
In the demanding role of Joseph, Keith Jack, pictured, displays a real feel for the character and some very adept lead vocals.
As Jacob, the vastly experienced Henry Metcalfe is subtly mesmeric, creating a moving poignancy as his missing son returns to his aging and frail father.
The large dynamic cast supply tremendous vitality and big vocal harmonies.
Choreography, lighting, sets, and costumes are imaginative, the direction is pacy, and the special effects are dazzling.
Almost stealing the show is the flawless 40-piece kids’ choir from Stagecoach, on stage throughout.
The colourful feel-good finale is spectacular, and the encores brought a standing ovation from a delighted packed house.
Runs until August 14.
