Ghost the Musical
Ghost is at the Piccadilly Theatre on Shaftsbury Avenue.
I went to see the thursday matinee, had a good seat in the stalls Row J slap bang in the middle.
If you have seen the 1990 film you will know the story of Sam and Molly played by Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in the 1990 film.
In this stage version Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy play the main characters.Sharon D Clakre is Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg in the film) is the spiritualist, so funny with audience roaring out loud at her antics. She wears a very multi coloured cloak in the first scene.
At first I didnt like the characters speaking in an american accent, but of course it is set in Brooklyn so its true to the film. I personally feel Richard is too young for the role but he is on stage most of the time and does a very good job. Caissie is an amazing singer. A good show for me is one where you get totally absorbed and everyone is utterly believeable, there were tears of course when he dies, one minute he is on the floor, the next he magically appears on the other side of the stage looking at his own dead body.
I have no idea how to explain the special effects, one scene has Sam as a ghost disappearing through a solid door!!!!!!! There are very many special effects.
In the hospital scene there is an an old ghost tap dancing and singing Ball of Wax, reminded me very much of Mr Cellophane from Chicago. Be an ideal role for Paul Tate.
Was looking forward to see Adebayo Bolaji as the Subway Ghost. WOW, his character is very loud, scary and fierce, he wears long grey dreadlocks. He doesnt want Sam getting on HIS train. As usual Ade is remarkable in all I have seen him go on to do since his Joseph days.
During the interval as I sat back in my seat I heard someone call my name and Dean Read was sitting in the same row as me 4 seats away. He is looking very well, and has renewed his contract with We Will Rock You for another year. His mate was on as cover Carl (Paul Ayres), who was spot on in the role.
The whole ensemble gave it their all. I really hope you get chance to go see Ghost it will take your breath away. BTW Jez Unwin is in the ensemble and also Rochelle Neil ( she was on holiday so didnt get to see her perform).
Thank you to Matt Hanbury who met me at Euston and escorted me by tube to Leicester Square, where we went to the M&M store at the top of the square and then onto Piccadilly for coffee. 3 floors of M&M sweets and merchandise, and people dressed as characters from the advert. A big kids paradise.
I had a senior moment 5 mins before I got my train back. I couldnt find both parts of my return train tickets, tipped all my bag out and I had somehow thrown away the first part of return ticket and kept the outward. I was panicking I wouldnt be be allowed on the on the train. Luckily no ticket inspectors on the barriers or on the train, PHEW!!!!!! I had visions of me having to pay £90.
On the outward journey I was in a quiet zone and a 60 year old man was talking on his mobile phone, I was in a carriage full of men who were raising their eyes to the ceiling and looking at him, so I tapped him on the shoulder and shhhhh'd him and pointed out the quiet zone. He didnt do it again.
Do go and see this remarkable piece of theatre you wont regret it.
