Here's hoping some of you theatrical types can help a fool like me. I am making a large prop and part of it involves a papier mache shape that I have made from layers of diluted PVA and newspaper over a glass basin. Unfortunately I was silly enough to neither grease the bowl first or cover it with foil etc. Now I can't get the shape off the basin!!! Any ideas? Thankyou!

You make me laugh laughing at me!!! And smashing the basin is not really an option... The aforementioned large prop has just toppled off the chair that was supporting it and deposited PVA glue onto the carpet.... I have just had a most bizarre thought - the newspaper I am using at the moment is an illustrated supplement of primary school classes. I wonder how many of the children whose pic is in the paper will go to see the pantomime, featuring my prop, never knowing that their photo is under all the paint!!! (And you thought you'd got the monopoly on 'yampy' Lynda...)

dont you dare pinch my name, Yampy belongs to me. I had to explain what it meant once to Gavin. I think its a brummie word. He had never of it before. Suprises me how many real yampies dont think they are.*nudge nudge wink wink* . now does that mean I really am cos I refer to others as real yampies. ooo eeeer getting confused now. Will have to ask the cast. Wont ask Richard he is too polite. Marlon will tell me.

You need some heat on it to melt the glue, it might get soggy but try to i mmerse it in hot soapy water. You will have to start again probably!! Dina

Now why didn't I think of that - thanks Dina! I can't try it just now as I decided to add some more layers and it's not dry. When it is I'll fill the basin with boiling water and see if that loosens it. I really don't want to start again - this is my second effort - the first was too small and I'm holding up rehearsals cos it's not ready!

Please use an inflated balloon if you have to do it again. Did the other squashed thingies go ok ?

Yes thankyou very much - the lady who was dealing with me used to work with me 20 years ago! And she recognised me! Hey, I'm not proud. BTW just in case you - or anyone else - is waiting for a reply from me to an email, my server has died since lunchtime - says it's 'too busy' (This should go in 'hmmph' really)

And how!!!!!! Things never stay in the same place do they? One person there complimented me on the judicious (now there's a word for a Thursday) use of my pashmina.

Okay so it's nt so much props as part of a costume!! Doe any know how i could make some covers for boots. My black boots need to be purple!? I have the material and i thought i had the know how but i don't! I have the leg bit tht was simple but the actual foot bit i haven't got a clue about! I had to pick something hard to do didn't i?! I had to b Daphne!

I think the easiest way would be to do what ice skaters do - make a cover from some stretchy purple material, or even buy some opague purple tights and cover the boots with them, but not over the whole sole or they'll be too slippy. I made some panto boots once from black felt - you could do the same with purple. It's a bit complicated to explain all here, but I found out how from a book on theatrical property-making from the library. I glued the whole of the boots together - no sewing. Then if you mix poster paint 50:50 with PVA glue and brush it on, it stiffens the felt and also makes it look like leather.
