The Phantom of the Opera has been named as the most popular of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals in our online poll. The production opened in the West End in 1986 at Her Majesty’s Theatre and has been playing there ever since. The show has also played across the world and recently opened in a 90-minute version in Las Vegas. Taking 25.7% of the vote, it narrowly beat Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which recorded 20.3%. Joseph, which debuted in 1968, has recently enjoyed a West End revival starring Lee Mead, who was chosen through TV talent show Any Dream Will Do. Lloyd Webber’s other break-through hit, Jesus Christ Superstar, which like Joseph was written with Tim Rice, came third with 13.7% of the vote. The survey, which asked readers what their favourite Lloyd Webber musical is out of 13 choices, ran on www.thestage.co.uk to coincide with Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday last weekend, on March 22. Lloyd Webber is currently working on a sequel to Phantom of the Opera.
