Q & A from lee's website
As fans will know, Lee has been pretty busy of late, spending all his time alternating between the recording studio and the Adelphi Theatre, but - as promised - we managed to catch up with him to pose a selection of your questions...
Did you get to choose the colour of your ADWD coat? Emma Sadly No but I was very happy with the colour I was given
I believe that Andrew Lloyd Webber has said that there was a particular point at which he suddenly became aware of Lee’s leading man potential. Does Lee know when that was? Ingrid I don’t really know but I hope he thought I was consistent throughout the competition.
When Graham first announced you the winner, what was the first thought that went through your head? Kirsti, Liz Shock! I always believed I could play the role of Joseph, but had no idea what the final outcome would be. And of course, I was over the moon!
You once said that the songs on ADWD were not the kind of songs you would normally choose to sing. What song would you have chosen had you been given free range over your performances? Tamsin, Esther, Michelle , Emma It’s a hard choice as there are so many songs I like. I may have chosen some more musical theatre songs. I really like ‘On The Street Where You Live’ from My Fair Lady and ‘I Want To Break Free’ from We Will Rock You
Who were you closest to in the ADWD house, and do you still keep in touch with any of them? Niamh, Rougi, Claire, Louisa We all got on well but I guess I was closest to Daniel & Craig. We still talk regularly.
Is there a part of you that wishes you could have won the role of Joseph through a normal audition, escaping all the hype and attention that have come from being on ADWD? Louisa There is a small part yes. The audition process over three months live to the nation wasn’t normal. But it has given me a level of profile and exposure that I wouldn’t have had.
What do you do to prepare yourself before curtain up at each performance? Do you have a pre-show good luck ritual? For example do you still to into your “Joseph Zone” by doing press-ups etc? Liz, Michelle, Isabel, Emma, Tracey I try to have at least 5 minutes on my own quietly and have a cup of hot water.
Do you get nervous before you go on stage, and if so, how do you cope? Amelia, Alison I don’t really get nervous as I have settled into the role, and experience helps a lot. But I do definitely get a buzz from performing the role.
You obviously still appear to be loving every moment of appearing in Joseph – how will you continue to keep the role fresh doing 8 shows a week? Does it still you as much of a thrill when the curtain goes up now as it did on the opening night? Shirley, Kirsten, Stacey , Sarah, Lotty, Helen, Andrea, Alison Every show is different. Maybe not on paper but it’s live theatre and my job is to keep it fresh and have fun which I do every show.
Is being a leading man how you imagined it would be? Louisa Completely. It’s a dream come true to lead a company and play a great role. It also has its pressures – your name is out there and people expect a level of quality, which I hope I achieve each performance.
The audience can see how much YOU and the cast are enjoying yourselves. Can you see anything of the audience and can you tell how much fun they are having? Diana, Northampton, Shirley Cooke I do catch odd moments from the audience, mainly towards the end of the show and it is great to see happy faces.
What is your favourite part of the show and/or your favourite number to sing? Steph, Jo, Alison, Tracey My favourite part of the show is when Joseph becomes the second ruler of Egypt, Pharaoh Number 2. He becomes a man. Favourite song has to be “Close Every Door”. I think it is still one of the best musical theatre ballads.
Have you or the other cast members named the sheep/snake/camel? Tracey I know the camel has been named Reginald!
You become Joseph for the two hours of the show but what characteristics do you think you share with the Biblical character? Liz J Sensitivity, strength and determination
How many coats and loincloths exist? Is there only one coat or is it changed – or cleaned – from time to time? Sue, Cathy, Tracey There are two loincloths that alternate each show. There are also two coats one that is ripped and the normal coat which I wear on and off in the show
Is it scary to stand at the platform high up at the end of the show: I seem to remember you weren’t too fond of heights? Eva I am getting used to it. It was very scary at first, but over time I have conquered my fear. I am really having fun up on stage now
What’s the last really unhealthy thing you ate or are you permanently thinking about the loincloth? Louisa I do have a balanced diet and try to eat healthily. The last naughty thing I ate was a Hawaiian Pizza (large!)
Did you grow your hair especially for the part and will you be cutting off your curls again when you leave Joseph? Jodie, Louisa, Emma It was already quite long during the show but I decided to keep growing it. I do intend to keep my curls unless a different role requires me to cut them off.
How many autographs do you estimate you have signed, including those on the pictures you give out? Have you ever thought "I just can't be bothered going out and facing the crowd?" (it never looks that way!) Michelle At a guess – 7000 possibly more! I do get days where I am tired but never tired of the crowds or fans. The support has been huge and the audience deserve my time and the best show I can give
What would you like to do once your role in Joseph comes to an end? Is there any particular musical role you would love to play? Liz, Rougi, Alison, Claire, Caoimhe, Sarah I am always open to new shows and projects. There are many more avenues that I would like to explore but for now I want to embrace and enjoy the Joseph experience.
